Graduate Introduction to Database Systems

The goal of the course is to introduce students to the main issues on the design and implementation of a database kernel and how these systems store, organize, and retrieve large amount of data efficiently and effectively. Major topics of this course include: Query Languages (SQL, Relational Algebra); Storage and Indexing; Query Evaluation and Optimization; Transaction Processing; Concurrency Control and Recovery. In addition, we will cover some modern data management approaches, including Big Data and NoSQL databases and data management in the Cloud.
